On Wednesday, Sia was spotted at LAX without her signature massive wig. The songstress let everyone see her usually hidden face.
The 41 year-old star kept her look relaxed and natural. She wore neutral-colored Kenzo sweatpants and cropped sweatshirt for her travel. The singer was flying to Dubai where she is set to perform this weekend.
Catching a sight of the Australian singer’s face is indeed a rare treat. Because even during concerts and interviews, she usually keeps her appearance obscured.
Sia spoke to Nightline’s Chris Conley about why she hides her face. And naturally, she explained it with her back turned to him. “I don’t want to be famous, or recognizable,” she said. “I don’t want to be critiqued about the way that I look on the Internet.”
Maddie Ziegler who is Sia’s steady dancer co-star, also opened up about her veiling act. “She only covers her face for appearances, for performances and things,” Maddie shared.
The 14 year-old further explained, “It could be weird if she just wore a wig talking to her friends. I think she just wants to be known for like a great artist rather than just being known for her face or something. What I love about her is she so in love with dance that she makes that the main focus.”
“She’s the goofiest person I’ve met. She’s giggling all the time. You can’t ever really take her seriously when you’re with her,” the young dancer added.
Unsurprisingly, Maddie has formed a close relationship with the Australian singer. In fact, the two are also currently on tour.
Then again, there are instances when her face unintentionally sneaks out of her elaborate wigs. Last summer, Sia’s wig was shifted by a big gust of wind. It gave the audience a quick looksee at her face. It happened during one of her concerts in Colorado.
The mysterious singer-songwriter’s strategies go beyond wigs as well. She has been seen using silver masks and brown paper bags to keep her facelessness.
She also shared, “You know I was at Target the other day buying a hose and nobody recognized me—and my song was on the radio. And I thought, OK, this experiment is working.”
As for what’s up next in their career, Maddie says the two of them are heading to the big screen. “We do have a movie. We put it aside for a little bit because we’ve been on tour and stuff, but things will be happening in the future,” the teen shared.
Also, in her diary, she shared that the singer wants her to portray a younger version of herself in a Sia life story.
