The 63 year-old model makes a come back to the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue in a photo shoot. Now she is joined by her daughters, Alexa Ray Joel, 31, and Sailor Brinkley Cook, 18.
On Monday, a photo was released with the three women posing together in black swimsuits.
Christie Brinkley first graced the cover of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue in 1979. She also covered the Swimsuit Issue in 1980 and 1981 and has been featured in the magazine eight times total.
For years, she traveled around the world posing in one glamorous place after another, before finally hanging up her racy bikinis in 2004. But then once again, currently 63 years old, Christie is now returning to the SI Swim circle, establishing her ageless physique. This time, she is joined along by two exceptional models.
When the veteran model was asked to do the photoshoot, she revealed, “My first thought was, ‘At my age? No way!’ When I turned 30, I was like, ‘This is the last time I’m posing in bathing suit!’ When this issue comes out, I’ll be 63. I thought, ‘Those days are over.’ But to get to do it with my girls, I thought, ‘One last go!’”
The trio are wearing matching swimsuits in the sensual spread, featuring a mesh one-piece on Christie. They stand on the coastline of a serene Turks & Caicos beach.
Sailor is Christie’s younger daughter with her former husband, Peter Cook. She is not new in posing and shoots. She has already tried her luck as a model but said that the SI Swim experience made her feel very empowered and emancipated.
However, Alexa who is the older sibling, had a different feedback when she was requested to take part in the shoot. Reports said she “needed to be talked into embracing new experiences.”
And despite the fact that Christie is struggling with her own insecurities, she is hoping her bold comeback will trigger a discussion on ageism not only in the modeling world but in other trades as well.
She shared, “In a country that’s very ageist, people love to put you in little boxes. Women feel very limited by their numbers. On a personal level, I thought, if I can pull this off, I think it will help redefine those numbers and remove some of the fear of aging.”
Recently, the fashion industry icon released a skincare line. She has frankly acknowledged that she underwent a few procedures over the years. Christie stated, “If you want to look refreshed, it has to be with a light hand. It’s one of the biggest mistakes when people deliberately go for that ‘done’ appearance — to each his own, obviously, but that’s not good.”
She continued, “Don’t change your face; maybe just change a wrinkle or two that’s bothering you. You still should look like you.”
The 2017 SI Swimsuit Issue comes out on newsstands on February 15.
